Relationship and causality between export competitiveness and product price cocoa bean in Peru

The objective of this research addresses the relationship and causality of the competitiveness of cocoa and its exported derivatives, and the price of cocoa beans (Pcacao). For this purpose, the Index of Revealed Comparative Advantages of cocoa and its derivatives (IVCR cocoa) was determined; Next, the stationarity of the IVCR cocoa and Pcacao variables was econometrically evaluated. The long-term relationship was determined using the Johansen cointegration test and the Error Correction Vector test for the cointegration expression for the period 2001-2018. The results of the IVCR cocoa demonstrated increases in the competitiveness of cocoa until obtaining a level of competitive advantages for Peru. Likewise, the Error Correction Vector test demonstrated a cointegration expression, as did the Johansen cointegration test, which showed a long-term relationship between IVCR cocoa and Pcacao. In conclusion, it can be stated that during the period from 2001 to 2018, the competitiveness of cocoa and its derivatives, as well as the prices of the cocoa bean, were associated, with the price of the cocoa bean being the one that influenced its competitiveness.
